Madison Wrestling: A Regular Season Recap
The Madison wrestlers defeated divisional opponents Grady and Goldstein last Tuesday, before travelling to Midwood on Thursday for their concluding divisional match. Defeating Midwood 50-21, Madison secured another divisional title, and guaranteed themselves a home playoff match on February 6th.
Two days later, the team traveled to Long Island for the Sewanhaka West Dual Meet Tournament, at Elmont High School. The Golden Knights earned five wins over Hicksville (60-24), Sayville (75-6), Mineola (46-36), Sewanhaka West High School (42-34), and New Rochelle, in a close match that ended in a tie after Nikita Ignatenko at 120 pounds secured the fall to get Madison even with New Rochelle, 39-39. As neither team had any unsportsmanlike or misconduct penalties, the match was decided by most bouts won, which was in Madison’s favor, 8-7.
This performance improved the team’s overall dual meet record to 22-6.
Undefeated on the day for Madison were Alex Troshyn (126), Mirlan Jumabaev (145), Konstantin Parfiryev (160), Javaughn Grant (195), and Anand Munkhjargal (285).
On this same day, three Madison wrestlers placed in the PSAL Freshman-Sophomore Championships, at Brooklyn Tech. Taking 1st place at 160 pounds was freshman Thomas Tatesure. Also placing were sophomores Angel Tapia, 3rd at 152 pounds, and Howie Wang, 2nd at 120 pounds.
The following day seven Madison wrestlers took to the mats again in the MLK Invitational Tournament at Wingate High School. Taking 1st place were Konstantin Parfiryev and Javaughn Grant, who were both a perfect 8-0 for the weekend.
Anand Munkhjargal took 2nd place at 285 pounds, Mirlan Jumabaev bounced back to take 3rd at 145 pounds, and first year wrestler Alex Vidyaev battled hard for a 4th place finish.
All of this work was to best prepare themselves for the Mayors Cup this weekend, January 25th and 26th, at Columbia University.
The PSAL Team Championships will begin on February 6th, with the remainder of the matches to be wrestled on one day, February 8th at a location yet to be announced.
The PSAL City Individual Championships will take place on February 15th, also at a location to be announced.
