Winter is Here: Madison Wrestling is Back on the Mats for the 2013-2014 Season

Take the Pain M darkIn a re-match of last year’s tightly contested 3rd place PSAL Team Championship bout, Madison wrestling will begin the season with Martin Luther King Jr. High School, at home, on Tuesday, November 26th, at 5 PM.

In addition to being the home opener for the Golden Knights, this is the 1st round of the PSAL Holiday Tournament, which will culminate on Sunday morning at the Grapple at the Garden, at Madison Square Garden.

Graduating seniors Louis Cigliano, Youssef Eliali, and Kujtim Nikq, left behind some big shoes to fill, but with some strong new additions, and many returning starters from last year’s line-up, the Madison team is looking to pick up right where they left off last year.

Three of the four returning Seniors are 4th year wrestlers for Madison. Leading the group are team Captains Marc D’Chiutiis, and Konstantin Parfiryev. Marc is a two-time city finalist, and Konstantin is a returning City Champion, and State place finisher. These wrestlers combined for over 70 wins last year. Also coming back for his 4th season, is Senior Javaughn Grant, who had 23 wins for the team last year. Sanjar Alimukhammad, who was quite the impact wrestler last year, is also back in the starting line-up. His strength, and mental toughness prevented him from ever losing by pin.

Rounding out the returning roster of wrestlers, and expected to have a big season this year are Juniors Mirlan Jumabaev, and Eugene Khalabudnyak, along with Sophomores Albi Miraka (7th at 220, and only 1 win shy of a 20 win season), Angel Tapia, and Brandon Santiago.

As any successful coach will tell you, if you can get points from new arrivals, you will have success as a team. This year’s crop of new wrestlers for Madison will prove that point. Umarbek Rakhmatov, Alex Troshyn, Alex Denisov, and Anand Munkhjargal will all be featured in the starting line-up.

Rounding out the starting line-up will be Brandon Costantino, Corey Jospeh, and Mansur Bulatov, along with 1st year wrestlers Nikita Ignatenko, Corey Feliciano, Alex Vidyaev, Antonio Sanchez, and Thomas Tatesure.

Last year, James Madison High School Wrestling finished the season with a 15 and 3 overall record, and a 3rd place finish in the PSAL Team Dual Championships. This year’s team is expected to improve upon that record. With 30 dual meets scheduled, along with numerous individual tournaments, the team will have plenty of opportunities to put in the necessary work, gain the much needed experience, and improve, all for the chance to wrestle last at the PSAL Team Championships on Saturday, February 8th.
