Nine Madison wrestlers were selected to the Beat the Streets State Travel Team, and will represent New York City at the NY – USA Wrestling Freestyle & Greco State Championships, at Broome Community College in Binghamton, New York.

In the Cadet division, Madison will be represented by freshmen Brandon Santiago (120) and Albi Miraka (220), along with sophomore Eugene Khalabudnyak (138).

In the Junior division, Madison is led by team captains Konstantin Parfiryev (160) and Marc D’Chiutiis (145), along with Javaughn Grant (220), and Mark Ifraimov (285). Also wrestling in this division are sophomores Askar Raimbek (152) and Mirlan Jumabaev (145)

This past weekend, at the North East Regionals, in East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania, Konstantin Parfirev and Mark Ifraimov qualified for the ASICS/Vaughan Greco National Championships, in Fargo, North Dakota.

This Saturday, April 20th, many Madison wrestlers will compete at the 2013 New York State Freestyle Qualifier at Petrides High School, 715 Ocean Terrace Staten Island, New York 1030.

Those wrestlers that qualify will then compete at the New York State Freestyle and Greco Championships over the weekend of Friday, May 10th – Sunday, the 12th at Broome Community College in Binghamton New York.

Scales open at 7:30 AM and close at 8:30 AM.

There is a 30 dollar registration fee per wrestler, this is used to support Section XII Wrestling, and help cover the travel costs of taking kids to States in Binghamton.

Konstantin Parfiryev finished a great junior season by earning All-State credentials at the 2013 New York State Wrestling Championships, held in Albany, New York.

After defeating Joe Mastro, Yorktown-I, Konstantin lost in the quarter finals to Corey Rasheed, Longwood-XI. Corey Rasheed would go on to win the State title at 152 pounds, with a 1st period pin.

In the consolation round, Konstantin squared off against Tommy Quinlan, Fayettevill Manlius-III. Quinlan was coming off a major decision in the first round of the consolations, and seemed to have some momentum going into the match. In a hard fought, close match, Konstantin was able to secure an escape in the 3rd period, and win the match 1-0.

The following day began with the all important placing match. The match that makes you All State, or sends you home. Going against Declan Gray from Chaminade Catholic High School, Konstantin came out on top, 5-3.

The placing matches were tough losses, by scores of 3-0, and 5-0. However, Konstantin Parfiryev placed 6th in New York State at 152 pounds, and earned “All-State” honors.

Konstantin finished his season with an overall record of 40 – 7, and while at States, earned his 100th career victory. Konstantin was also the champion at the Long Beach Invitational, the Dave Ironman at Monsignor Farrell, and was the “Best in the City,” taking first place after defeating Matt Russo from Horace Mann, at the NYC Mayors Cup.

On the cold, snowy Sunday morning following winter storm Nemo, eleven Madison wrestlers travelled to Truman High School in the Bronx for the 2013 PSAL City Championships and State Qualifier. Wrestling started right on time, and instantly the gym became a place where great happiness, and painful disappointment, would share space. For some, the individual winners, the season would last another couple of weeks. For everyone else, their off-season would begin shortly.

Placing for the Golden Knights wrestling program were Team Captains Konstantin Parfiryev, who took first place at 152 pounds, and Marc D’Chiutiis, who placed second at 145 pounds.

Senior Louis Cigliano finished his season strong with a record of 28-2, and a 3rd place finish at 152 pounds.

Heavyweight Mark Ifraimov took 6th place, and freshman Albi Miraka at 220 pounds battled hard to win his last match of the season, and take 7th place.

Madison Wrestling travelled to Petrides High School on Super Bowl Sunday for a PSAL Championship qualifying tournament.

Thirteen wrestlers made the trip, and all thirteen qualifed for the PSAL Individual Championships, at Truman High School in the Bronx.

Day 1 is Saturday, February 9th, and the medal rounds will be wrestled on the 2nd day, Sunday, February 10th.

It was 2009 the last time a Madison Golden Knight Wrestler stood atop the podium at the NYC Mayors Cup.  In the largest high school wrestling event in New York City, with 72 teams and over 500 wrestlers from Catholic, Private and Public schools, all competing for “All-City” honors, Madison broke into the top 10 of team place finishers. Making the day more special, both team captains medaled. Marc D’Chiutiss placed 3rd at 145 pounds, and Konstantin Parfiryev took 1st place at 152 pounds.

Konstantin pinned his way to the championship platform, where he faced off against undefeated Matthew Russo from Horace Mann. These two met early in December, and Russo picked up the win in a close decision. To make the match-up more exciting, Coach Ned Campbell had wrestled for Horace Mann.

Konstantin once again proved his title as “most improved wrestler in the city.” Taking control from the outset, Konstantin scored first, and kept the lead throughout, ending it with a 8-3 decision.

James Madison High School Wrestling fell short in their quest for a PSAL Dual Meet Championship, losing in the semi-finals to Benjamin Cardozo, 41-24. In a change from previous years PSAL playoffs, the two teams which lost in the semi-finals would immediately square off against each other to take 3rd place. For Madison, that meant a tough match against MLK High School only moments after losing to Cardozo.

The semi-finals match up had everything a fan could want. There were many tough match-ups with ranked wrestlers going head to head, and a close score throughout, in fact, the score was tied 21-21 after ten bouts.

The match started at 126 pounds with Rex Villa setting the pace for Cardozo with a pin. Following some great marquee match-ups between Louis Cigliano at 152 pounds, who defeated Taquee Burns, 10-8, and Youssef Eliali with a 3-2 decision over Fabian Bramwell at 170 pounds, the score was knotted at 21. The heavyweight battle saw Madison’s Mark Ifraimov take care of Chijioke Ezenyilimba by a score of 7-6. That made it 24-21, in favor of Madison going back to the bottom of the weight classes. Starting at 99 pounds, Cardozo swept the next four bouts, earning 20 points and ending the match with a win and the chance to battle Brooklyn Tech for the Championship on January 29th.

Following this tough and disappointing loss, the Golden Knights had to quickly rally, and go back on the mat to take on MLK High School. That match started with a Madison win, as Askar Raimbek defeated PSAL ranked wrestler Jonathan Alicea by a score of 13-10. MLK would take the next two with decisions, and then Madison notched wins in six of the next eight bouts, earning falls in five of them.

With the score Madison 36 and MLK 35, it all came down to the last match at 126 pounds. Eugene Khalabudnyak sealed the win, and 3rd place overall for the team, with a fall in the 2nd period.

James Madison High School Wrestling finished the season with a 15 and 3 overall record, and a 3rd place finish in the PSAL Team Dual Championships. The team has five ranked wrestlers, all with 20+ wins on the season, and another two wrestlers look to join this circle of “20+ wins” this weekend at the 2013 NYC Mayors Cup.

PSAL TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI – FINALS!!!

 The Golden Knights Wrestlers are now 14 and 2 overall, and will wrestle in the semi-finals on Thursday against Benjamin Cardozo

The Madison wrestlers look to avenge their only PSAL loss this season with a win over Cardozo, and advance to Team Championships!!

On Friday, January 4^th, Madison Wrestling defeated New Utrecht 50 – 30, taking the Utes down off the list of undefeated teams.

The dual meet started with a re-match at 132 pounds from the prior week’s Goddard Tournament, between Askar Raimbek of Madison and De Xuan Chen of New Utrecht. In a closely contested, back and forth match, Madison’s Raimbek once again bested Chen by a score of 13-10.

Madison dropped the next two bouts with decisions of 7-1, and 6-2, giving New Utrecht a 6-3 lead in team points going into the 152 pound weight class. Louis Cigliano got the Golden Knights going, taking control of the match right away, Cigliano recorded a 3rd period pin over New Utrecht’s Andrew Weitsman. That put Madison in the lead with a team score of 9-6, from which the Madison wrestlers would pulll ahead and never look back, as they took five out of the next six weight classes, making the score 39-12 before dropping back down to the 99# weight class.

New Utrecht’s Michael Brevetti scored a pin at 99 pounds, and his brother Louis Brevetti took a forfeit at 106 pounds, making the match 39-24 before Madison added 11 more points with a pin at 113, and a tech fall at 120 pounds. New Utrecht won the final bout of the evening at 126 pounds, making the final score 50-30, in favor of Madison.

Madison improved to 9-2 overall for the season, and remains undefeated in their PSAL Brooklyn division. The Golden Knights will finish out their regular season this week with home duals against Leon Goldstein and Midwood high schools on Wednesday January 9^th, and then FDR on the 10th.

This past Saturday, James Madison High School was the proud host of the 6th annual Paul Goddard Individual Tournament . The tournament is named for the founder, and former coach, of Nazareth High School Wrestling.

On hand were many former wrestlers of Coach Goddard, along with many former wrestlers from Madison Wrestling. With three mats down in the big gym, and eleven teams competing, the Madison wrestlers repeated their performance of last year, and once again, won the tournament with 151 points, over New Utrecht (138), and Wingate (134).

Taking 1st place in the tournament for Madison were Louis Cigliano at 152 pounds, Javaughn Grant at 195 pounds, and Kujtim Nikq at heavyweight. Also placing were Youssef Eliali, Aaron Payton, Oskar Raimbek, and Mark Ifraimov.

The Most Outstaning Wrestler award went to Nigel Williams (145#) from Eagle Academy.

The Golden Knights will open up the 2nd half of their schedule against undefeated New Utrecht, in a dual meet on January 4th. The team then travels to Monsignor Farrell the next day for the always tough Dave Ironman Tournament.
