On Friday, January 4th, Madison Wrestling defeated New Utrecht 50 – 30, taking the Utes down off the list of undefeated teams.
The dual meet started with a re-match at 132 pounds from the prior week’s Goddard Tournament, between Askar Raimbek of Madison and De Xuan Chen of New Utrecht. In a closely contested, back and forth match, Madison’s Raimbek once again bested Chen by a score of 13-10.
Madison dropped the next two bouts with decisions of 7-1, and 6-2, giving New Utrecht a 6-3 lead in team points going into the 152 pound weight class. Louis Cigliano got the Golden Knights going, taking control of the match right away, Cigliano recorded a 3rd period pin over New Utrecht’s Andrew Weitsman. That put Madison in the lead with a team score of 9-6, from which the Madison wrestlers would pulll ahead and never look back, as they took five out of the next six weight classes, making the score 39-12 before dropping back down to the 99# weight class.
New Utrecht’s Michael Brevetti scored a pin at 99 pounds, and his brother Louis Brevetti took a forfeit at 106 pounds, making the match 39-24 before Madison added 11 more points with a pin at 113, and a tech fall at 120 pounds. New Utrecht won the final bout of the evening at 126 pounds, making the final score 50-30, in favor of Madison.
Madison improved to 9-2 overall for the season, and remains undefeated in their PSAL Brooklyn division. The Golden Knights will finish out their regular season this week with home duals against Leon Goldstein and Midwood high schools on Wednesday January 9th, and then FDR on the 10th.
