Madison Wrestling Starts Strong

The James Madison High School Wrestling Team opened up their season last Thursday with a win, on the road, over defending PSAL Team Champions, Grand Street Campus by a score of 45-37. Senior Kujtim Nikq got things going for the Golden Knights with a quick pin at heavyweight. Also recording pins were team captains Marc D’Chiutiis and Konstantin Parfiryev, along with Javaughn Grant, who secured the victory with his pin at 220 pounds.

The following day, at the Horace Mann Duals, Madison Wrestling defeated White Plains High School (Section I), 68-3 in the first round. Then, against W.C, Bryant (PSAL), they rolled to a 77-3 victory, setting up a final round match-up for first place against the host school, Horace Mann.

In a hard fought, and very close contest, Madison was able to prevail with key wins by Marc D’Chiutiis at 145 pounds with a 3-2 decision over Brian Chen, and in a six minute battle at 285 pounds, Kujtim Nikq bested previously undefeated Andrew Schwartz, 8-2. Finally, at 113 pounds, it was Madison freshman Brandon Santiago who came up huge for the Golden Knights with a major decision, and four team points. It was that one extra point which turned out to be the difference, and gave Madison the win over Horace Mann, 34-33.

Madison Wrestling has their home opener on Monday December 10th. In a double header of wrestling, Madison will take on divisional rivals Lincoln High School and Erasmus Hall Campus. The Golden Knights will then travel Wednesday to Cardozo High School, and Poly Prep the next day, Thursday December 13th.
